“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that YOU would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.
(1 Chronicles 4:10 NKJV)
Prayer of Jabez got GOD’S attention and produced results! What was noteworthy of this prayer was the fact that Jabez asked for GOD’S blessing. The Bible gives very little background about Jabez, yet this particular prayer stuck out.
Grant that I may not pray alone with the mouth; help me that I may pray from the depths of my heart.
Lord, teach me to listen.
The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them.
Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to Thee, “Speak, for Thy servant heareth.” Let me hear Thee speaking in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Thy speaking. Amen.
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference living one day at a time, accepting hardships as a pathway to peace, taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it, trusting that You will make all things right, if I surrender to Your will, so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Reinhold Niebuhr 1892-1971
O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray And to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, But with you there is light; I am lonely, but you do not leave me; I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help; I am restless, but with you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience; I do not understand your ways, But you know the way for me… Restore me to liberty, And enable me to live now That I may answer before you and before me. Lord, whatever this day may bring, Your name be praised. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer
